Fernandes vs. Hellboy DREAM 13

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Joachim Hansen title fight in the works for DREAM.13
by Steven Marrocco on Jan 25, 2010 at 6:35 pm ET

Following a rubber-match loss to Shinya Aoki this past October, Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen (19-8-1 MMA, 3-2 DREAM) is thinking lighter.

A source close to the negotiations on Monday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the Norweigan fighter could drop a weight class to contend for the Japanese promotion's featherweight title, which is currently held by jiu-jitsu ace Bibiano Fernandes (7-2 MMA, 4-0 DREAM).

On the same show in which Hansen faltered against Aoki, the Vancouver-based Fernandes capped an impressive run to best top-10 ranked Hiroyuki Takaya for the vacant featherweight belt in the first-ever DREAM featherweight grand prix.

FiveOuncesofPain.com on Monday first reported the possibility of the bout, which it has only been agreed upon and has not been signed, sources told MMAjunkie.com. There is no official word from DREAM on a date or location for the event.

Hansen battled back from a loss in the quarterfinals of DREAM's 2008 Lightweight Grand Prix to avenge a December 2006 defeat to Aoki. With the DREAM.5 win, he claimed the promotion's first 155-pound title. But injuries kept Hansen on the shelf for 15 months, and Aoki submitted him with an armbar when the two met a third time at DREAM.11.

Nevertheless, Hansen is still considered one of the most talented lightweights in the world outside the UFC (after the UFC's buyout of PRIDE in 2007, he sat dormant for several months after refusing to fight for the American promotion). He runs his own MMA gym in Oslo, Norway.

Fernandes, meanwhile, has racked up six straight wins to accompany his DREAM belt. A multi-title holder in world jiu-jitsu championships, Fernandes has a just two career MMA losses, which came at the hands of former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and notable Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto.

Fernandes currently trains with the Revolution Fight Team in suburban Vancouver, B.C.

Hansen looks skin and bones at lightweight already...don't know how he will cut down to 145.

It would be interesting, I'd favour Hansen due to his heart and well rounded skills here. Fernandes could use the grappling but Hansen's striking and set is too much I think.

The weight thing was my first thought. Not a lot of fat on that dude! Hope he's got everything under control and show up fresh and energetic

I had no ideal this guy could make 145. I guess when you fight Aoki, you just look huge.

I'll put it here instead of starting a new thread.

The Japanese-based DREAM promotion today officially announced its next event, DREAM.13, takes place March 22.

The event is set for the 17,000-seat Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, and is expected to air in North America on HDNet.

A featherweight title fight between champion Bibiano Fernandes (7-2 MMA, 4-0 DREAM) and Joachim Hansen (19-8-1 MMA, 3-2 DREAM) is possible for the show but wasn't part of today's announcement.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) passed along the news of the potential championship bout, which would see Hansen drop from lightweight to featherweight, on Monday. Although the bout is not signed, both competitors are believed to be open to the matchup.

DREAM.13 is the promotion's first event since the organization co-promoted the Dec. 31 "Dynamite!! 2009" show with World Victory Road's Sengoku event series. The year-end event featured a stacked lineup with some of DREAM's top fighters.

With the time difference between the U.S. and Japan, DREAM.13 takes place at about the same time as "UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones," a Colorado-based event that marks the UFC's debut on Spike TV. Brandon Vera meets Jon Jones in the headliner.

DREAM.13 matchups will be announced in the coming weeks.

I don't think losing to Aoki in the last few seconds of a fight I had for him is something to be ashamed of. I love the way Hellboy fights, and I don't know how he could drop anymore weight as tiny as he is at Lightweight.
